SAN DIEGO – The Peckham family of philanthropists has given $10 million to support cancer and blood-disorder programs at Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego.

The late Peter Peckham, a real estate executive and co-owner of the San Diego Padres, started making donations to the hospital in the late 1960s with his wife, Nancy.

Their son Michael and his wife, Lisa, also have given to the facility. The couple have a son who was treated successfully for cancer at the hospital, and Lisa Peckham once worked there as a registered nurse.

Rady officials said the latest gift will go toward constructing a 38-bed hematology and oncology center in their new Patient Care Pavilion. That center, scheduled to open in 2010, will be named for the Peckhams.
